Real-time crowd simulation in photogrammetry environments
We simulated 100,000 pedestrians in a 3D photogrammetry environment of Amsterdam, all in real-time. The crowd dynamically reacts to new obstacles inserted into the simulation, showcasing an unprecedented level of interactivity and realism. You can see it in action in the accompanying video!
We’ve successfully integrated multiple cutting-edge technologies to create high-performance, interactive, and scalable crowd simulations—all while maintaining compatibility with existing industry standards.
Key technologies powering this innovation
These are our key technologies:
SimCrowds– Our interactive crowd simulator, built in Unity 6, enables the setup, simulation, and visualization of massive crowds in real-time. Pedestrians plan paths, avoid collisions, coordinate behaviors, and dynamically respond to environmental changes.
TerraCrowds– Our high-performance crowd simulation engine, written in Rust, ensures maximum efficiency and scalability.
Cesium plugin Unity– We integrated high-performance OGC tile streaming for realistic geospatial visualization.
Photogrammetry data– We used high-quality city data from Kavel10 and aligned it with SPOTinfo’s semantic data layer to determine accurate walkable areas.
Why this matters?
This technology enables the creation of high-performance digital twins that can be applied to:
Event planning– Simulating pedestrian flows in large events.
Military training– Realistic scenario simulations for tactical planning.
Crowd flow studies– Understanding pedestrian movement in urban spaces.
What-if scenarios– Testing different interventions and designs.
Our techniques can be easily integrated into your digital twin use case, whether by using SimCrowds, integrating into your software, or streaming simulations directly into a GIS viewer via our uConnect component.
