Simulating safety - uCrowds at the IGV Fieldlab SAIL 2025

Over the past months, we’ve had the unique opportunity to contribute to the Fieldlab IGV SAIL 2025 initiative — a collaborative project focused on future-proof crowd management for one of the Netherlands' largest public events.

During the final event, we presented how uCrowds is helping partners gain real-time insight into crowd dynamics. We tackle a common challenge: limited understanding of the impact of large crowds in complex urban environments.

Check out the video below to see how we’ve brought crowd simulation to life during major test events like Remembrance Day and King’s Day in the City of Amsterdam.

Here’s what we brought to the table:

𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐝𝐬 — Our simulation engine that visualizes and forecasts pedestrian flows, allowing stakeholders to test “what-if” scenarios like road closures or evacuation times.

𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥-𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 — We now stream live crowd density maps into GIS platforms like MapGallery, powered by semantic city data from SPOTinfo BV and 3D visuals from Kavel 10.

𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐰𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 — With uConnect, we link simulations to real-time operational platforms via open standards (OGC WMS/WFS), supporting a shared situational awareness.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐥𝐚𝐛 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥? It wasn’t just the technology. It was the open collaboration across organizations. No contracts, no data silos — just shared ambition and trust. Testing together, learning together. Even side-by-side with real operations during live events.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭? We’re working on dynamic event handling, integration with sensor data, replay features through the KPN Data Services Hub with the help of Analyze, Avineon Tensing, Delft University of Technology, Utrecht University and others, and even deeper alignment between visual and semantic layers in digital twins.

Big thanks to all Fieldlab partners and to the Veiligheidsregio Amsterdam-Amstelland, Jan van der Poel, Steven van de Looij and colleagues for making this possible.

Let’s keep building toward a safer, smarter SAIL 2025!
